L.L. Bean Case Study
Retail Concept Store

Case Study: Transforming L.L. Bean's Concept Store with Innovative Graphics Solutions.

Client Background: The L.L. Bean creative team approached Kirkwood with a distinctive challenge: designing graphics for their upcoming concept store. Seeking guidance on material options, printing techniques, and size limitations, they engaged our team to collaborate on finding the best solutions to bring their creative vision to life.

Discovery and Collaboration: This inquiry aligned with our collaborative approach, where we work closely with clients to discover optimal solutions, substrates, and print techniques. Upon initial discussions, we received the first set of concept designs. Together with the L.L. Bean team, we engaged in brainstorming sessions to explore various material ideas. Subsequently, we began producing samples using their files on different material options.

Challenges and Solutions: The primary goal was to find a solution that seamlessly integrated with their new fixtures while achieving the desired visual appeal. The creative vision involved incorporating multiple textures, creating depth, and exploring innovative ways to use various mediums. A crucial consideration was ensuring that the final graphics could be easily changed at the store level. Additionally, cost-effective shipping for replacement graphics, given the quarterly changeouts, was a key concern.

Implemented Solutions: The resulting graphics for the new concept stores showcased a combination of permanent and seasonal elements. The comprehensive solution included:

  • Custom printed brushed silver panels

  • Dimensional lettering

  • Cut vinyl decals

  • Direct UV print to UltraBoard with custom cleats

  • Dye-sublimated fabric banners

  • Custom printed thin acetates with standoff hardware

Outcome: Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, Kirkwood successfully met L.L. Bean's requirements, delivering graphics that not only complemented their fixtures but also aligned with their seasonal and quarterly changeout needs. The implemented graphics strategy enhanced the visual appeal of the concept stores, contributing to a dynamic and engaging retail environment.
